THE RTA COMPULSORY RIDER TRAINING & TESTING SCHEME

A compulsory rider training scheme has been introduced to cover most of NSW. This training program is sponsored by the NSW Government and is administered by the RTA. However, the actual training is carried out by private companies on a contract basis. The program has been designed to help people gain basic riding skills in the relative safety of a rider training centre, in contrast to learning to ride in the busy public environment.

RTA Training Courses

The RTA of NSW introduced the Compulsory Rider Training Scheme in 1990. This Scheme is sponsored by the NSW Government, administered by the RTA and delivered by private Contractors. The Scheme covers roughly 90% of the State.

There are 2 levels of training.

They are Pre-Learner and Pre-Provisional licence training.

Pre-Learner Courses

The program has been designed to assist new riders to gain basic riding skills and become safer sooner. The training is delivered within the relative safety of a Rider Training Centre in contrast to occurring on public streets.

If you reside in an area where a Rider Training Centre has been established and you wish to obtain your motorcycle rider's license, you must attend and satisfactorily complete RTA pre-learner rider training.

The course duration is 7 hours, which is delivered in two 3.5-hour components over 2 consecutive days. The use of a motorcycle, helmet, gloves and eye protection is included in the course fee. You will need to wear sturdy long pants, a long sleeved jacket, which covers your arms, and sturdy footwear, which preferably affords you adequate ankle protection.

You will learn basic riding skills as well as safe riding on the road before venturing onto public streets.

The procedure to obtain your Learner License is:

  • Pay the course fee at an RTA Motor Registry & keep your receipt.
  • Call the RTA Customer Assistance Centre on 132 213 for information on course dates & times, book in for your course (quote your RTA receipt number).

NOTE: If you have a credit card you may pay & book your course on the phone.

ALL BOOKINGS FOR RTA RIDER TRAINING MUST BE MADE DIRECTLY THROUGH THE RTA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTRE (132 213). PLEASE DO NOT CALL WHEEL-SKILLS TO MAKE A COURSE BOOKING, AS WE ARE UNABLE TO ASSIST.

  • Attend for training and obtain your RTA Certificate of Competency (CoC), which is issued to you by Wheel-Skills on successful completion of the course. The CoC is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.
  • Take your CoC and proof of identity documents to the RTA Motor Registry.
  • Complete the RTA application form.
  • Pass an eyesight test.
  • Pass the computerised knowledge test.

You may then ride solo on public streets to continue to learn and prepare to undertake the Pre-Provisional Rider Training Course, which is the next level of training. (see Pre-Provisional Course information which follows).

IMPORTANT: Your Learner License is valid for 12 months. You must complete your Pre-Provisional Rider Training Course BEFORE your Learner License expires. It is suggested that you book in early for the Pre-Provisional Course to ensure that the training is completed well before your learner License expires - otherwise you will need to repeat the Pre-Learner Course.
