RMS Pre-Learner Course (Stage 1)

L-PlateSuccessful completion of this course will qualify you to obtain a NSW Class R Learner Rider Licence. This Licence will enable you to ride on the road, unaccompanied.

Evening courses are under Flood Lights at TUGGERAH, COFFS HARBOUR & LISMORE.

Please NOTE that training continues during wet weather at ALL centres.

The cost of the RMS Pre-Learner  course is $92 (inc GST), this fee includes 7 hours training, use of a motorcycle, Helmet (you may bring your own as  long as it is certified and a Full Face Helmet) and Gloves.

The Pre-Learner course has been carefully structured to assist new riders to gain the basic riding skills to become safer, sooner. The course is skills based and progressively introduces the most basic skills on day 1 to more advanced skills on day 2. You will be about 1.5 hours into the course before you even start the engine of the training bike.

  1. The training course is delivered within the safety of a Rider Training Centre, rather than on public streets.
  2. The course duration is 7 hours, which is split into two 3.5 hour sessions, over 2 consecutive days. You will need to attend at the same time on both days.
  3. The use of a motorcycle or motor scooter, helmet and gloves, is included in the course price.
  4. You will need to wear long trousers, a long sleeved jacket which covers your arms and sturdy footwear, which preferrably provides ankle protection.
  5. During the course you will learn basic motorcycle riding skills, attitude development and road-craft principles, all of which will help better equip you to venture out to ride on public streets.
  6. Participant numbers in each course are up to 6 persons, most courses have 5 or less.
  7. Within 3 months of successfully completing the Pre-Learner course, you must attend the RMS Motor Registry and pass the Knowledge Test to obtain your Learner Rider Licence.

Try the Knowledge Test (free of charge).

NOTE:  THE MINIMUM AGE FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PRE-LEARNER

               COURSE IS 16 YEARS & 6 MONTHS.

Bookings

To arrange a booking for a Pre-Learner course you have 3 alternatives:

    1. Visit your local Roads & Maritimes Services Motor Registry / Services NSW office; or
    2. Call the Roads & Maritime Services Customer Service Centre on 13 22 13; or
    3. Book online by visiting https://myrta.com/myTests/welcome.do

All bookings for Roads & Maritime Services Rider Training must be made directly through the RMS. Although we provide the training, we are unable to take bookings.

IMPORTANT:  When making your booking you need to specify that you want to use a "manual" or "automatic" bike. The RMS Booking System refers to motor scooters as "automatics". If you wish to do your course on a scooter, you must specify an "automatic" when making your course booking, otherwise a scooter will NOT be available when you arrive for the training.

Important!  Please note:

Your Learner Rider’s Licence is valid for a maximum of 12 months. You will need to successfully complete the second level of training, the PRE-PROVISIONAL COURSE (STAGE 2) before your Learner Licence expires – otherwise, you will need to repeat the Pre-Learner course.

Book your Pre-Provisional course early because if you leave it too late and are unable to attend a course before your Learner Licence expires, you will need to repeat the Pre-Learner course – this will be at your expense!

AT TIMES PRE-PROVISIONAL COURSES CAN BE BOOKED OUT FOR UP TO 4 WEEKS IN ADVANCE!
